About My Father's Bread
My Father’s Bread is a family owned and operated bakery currently located in Mount Dora, Florida. Based on an Alaskan sweet-sourdough bread culture brought to the sunshine state by our grandparents, our very operation is a multi-generational affair. From the baking to the website, we’re directly involved in every facet. Every day we produce homemade breads and cinnamon rolls - both for sale at our storefront, and to ship around the country. All of our products contain strictly natural ingredients, with no preservatives added whatsoever.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us by email or by phone at (352) 729 – 2079 Wed - Sun 8am - 5pm ET.
Our history
In the 1980s, our grandparents returned from Alaska with a sourdough culture that was sweeter than most. Our childhood memories are of visiting them and eating the delicious homemade bread they created using it. Our parents loved it too, and before long had plans to share it with even more people. In 1992 they started a bakery here in central Florida, selling bread and other goodies made from the culture. It became a local sensation, and soon we were even shipping bread to more than just friends and family.
Almost 20 years later – through good times and bad – we’re still baking delicious bread. The only real change is that we kids have grown up and are doing a lot more than taste tests!
About our sourdough bread
Sourdough cultures first came to prominence in the US during the California Gold Rush. 49ers were able to have a source of leavening for breads, muffins, etc that they could literally keep on their person. These ‘starters’ were wild yeasts that lived in water that became ‘cultured’ when they were routinely fed starch and sugar. Depending on what they were fed, their consistency and eventual taste would change.
As the frontiersmen traveled quite a lot in search of gold, their starters became a very important commodity. When they eventually trekked to Alaska, they brought their sourdough with them. In this colder, harsher climate, they often had to keep the starters very close to their body – even while they slept – to keep the culture warm enough to survive.
These Alaskan sourdough cultures still exist in many forms today – all ancestors of the original few, and all different in their own ways. Our starter, due to over 20 years of baking with our own recipes and sustaining in the same air, has become so unique that it only retains the smallest hint of sourdough taste.
